One of the most enjoyable moments for me on this dear Earth, is being amazed by an unusual turn of events when reading a story, and that’s exactly why I like to dig into ancient stories, myths and tales that were crafted by an untamed imagination. And today’s story is one of my all-time favorites: “Midas Touch”.

 Any guesses?

The story revolves around a wealthy king, who after earning the favor of Dionysus, was granted a remarkable wish: the ability to turn everything he touches into gold. A dazzling gift that Midas insisted on having even though Dionysus tried to warn him about the unintended consequences. Upon receiving his wish, Midas was delighted at the sight of the golden treasures he was creating with a mere touch, until he realized that his magical hands couldn’t spare the food or the water on his table. Feeling desperate, the king couldn’t help but cry and weep in despair. Moved by her father’s plight, the king’s daughter runs to her father, to be immediately turned into a golden statue once embraced in his arms.

After begging Dionysus to take back his gift, Midas was instructed to go to the river Pactolus, where he should wash away his golden touch and be free again. It is said that once the curse was lifted, the king became aware of the dangers of greed and turned out to be a more compassionate king, loved and cherished by his people.

And as the story goes, history proves itself at being a great teacher, as Midas's story revealed again and again that greed, is a nasty trait, so destructive that it can lead even the wisest among us to fall over the cliff of foolish ambition.

Meryem !
